Overview

The Dr. Margaret Handy Memorial Lectureship is a dynamic event designed to provide insight into cutting edge topics in Neonatal/Perinatal Medicine. This year’s lectureship includes new technology to support development of extremely preterm infants after birth, trends in parental vitamin K refusal, skin care for extremely preterm infants, and the role of trauma-informed care in neonatal intensive care.

Speaker Bios

Dr. Alan Flake is a pediatric surgeon at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and holds the Ruth M. and Tristam C Colket, Jr Endowed Chair in Pediatric Surgery at CHOP.  He specializes in fetal surgery and is known for his pioneering work on in utero stem cell and gene therapy and the EXTEND, or artificial womb, technology.

Dr. Amy Hobson is neonatologist at the University of Iowa.  Her interests include care of the extremely preterm neonate, and in particular, the science and practice of skin care in these fragile patients.

Dr. Lisa Wallace is a neonatologist at CHOP at ChristianaCare.  She holds a Masters in Public Health and has interests in trauma informed care in the NICU; she has developed interactive case-based education modules for NICU providers to help teach this important skill.

Dr. Kristan Scott is a neonatologist and health services researcher at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. His work focuses on perinatal health policy and the drivers of disparities in maternal and infant morbidity and mortality, including intramuscular vitamin K administration and its downstream consequences.

Target Audience

This event is intended for neonatologists, pediatricians, obstetricians, perinatologists, pediatric/neonatal, and obstetrical nurses, epidemiologists, and other health care providers for mothers and children.

Statement of Need

Neonatal providers require updated knowledge regarding advanced extracorporeal care—specifically EXTEND technology—and evidence-based strategies to optimize vulnerable skin development in extremely preterm infants. Additionally, clinical teams must navigate shifting public health trends by recognizing parental vitamin K refusal patterns to improve counseling, while also integrating trauma-informed care principles to support the psychological stress of NICU families. This activity equips the interprofessional healthcare team with the latest research and clinical strategies to improve patient safety, neonatal outcomes, and family-centered support.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity learners should be able to:

1. Recognize trends in vitamin K refusal among parents of newborns.
2. Describe the EXTEND technology and applications for its use.
3. Describe ways to care for the skin of extremely preterm infants.
4. Describe how trauma informed care can be used to support parents of critically ill newborns.
