Overview
The Annual William J. Holloway Infectious Disease Symposium continues its tradition of delivering timely, evidence-based education on important infectious disease topics. This year’s program will focus on updated pneumonia management guidelines, emerging diagnostic technologies, and the integration of new and existing testing methods into clinical practice. Additionally, the symposium will address infectious disease considerations in patients with substance use disorders, providing practical guidance to enhance patient care and outcomes.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for primary care physicians, specialty physicians, pharmacists, residents, medical students, physician assistants, nurses, and nurse practitioners.
Statement of Need
Clinicians demonstrate limited awareness of updated pneumonia guidelines, particularly the recommendations for shorter antibiotic durations. Additional gaps exist in knowledge and application of new and existing infectious disease testing methods. These deficiencies stem from recent advances in diagnostic technology and evolving clinical evidence. Education is needed to support effective integration of current guidelines and diagnostic strategies into clinical practice to improve patient care outcomes.
Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this activity learners should be able to:
- Describe current recommendations for pneumonia management based on updated guidelines and discuss areas of ongoing debate or uncertainty in clinical practice.
- Identify emerging diagnostic testing strategies and review existing infectious disease tests, with emphasis on appropriate application in patient evaluation.
- Recognize infectious disease risks specific to patients with substance use disorders and outline evidence-based approaches to their management.
