Overview
This summit is designed for healthcare professionals that interact with and help treat the morbidly obese patient. This educational opportunity is designed to improve care coordination and communication of provideers for obese patients.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for primary care physicians, specialty physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nutritionists, advanced practice providers, students, and pharmacists.
Statement of Need
Despite the rise of effective anti-obesity medications, many non-specialist providers lack the specific training to prescribe or monitor these therapies. This creates a knowledge gap when patients request treatment or receive it from outside sources, leading to fragmented care. This activity addresses the need for better interprofessional care coordination and consistent communication to ensure all providers can safely manage and support patients throughout their weight loss journey.
Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this activity learners should be able to:
- Identify and evaluate evidence-based treatment programs and clinical pathways for patients with obesity to improve point-of-care decision-making.
- Implement best practices for documenting medical necessity to streamline the prior authorization process for anti-obesity medications.
- Develop and execute clinical management plans to proactively monitor, mitigate, and treat common side effects associated with weight loss pharmacotherapy.
