Overview
Governor Meyer has declared May 18–23, 2026 as Delaware’s inaugural Heat Awareness Week. As Delaware is one of the fastest warming states in the nation, ChristianaCare is developing a comprehensive program to raise awareness about the dangers of heat-related illness and mortality, particularly among vulnerable populations. Given that older adults are especially at risk, we have designated May 19 as Geriatrics Education Day for heat awareness and prevention
Target Audience
This activity is intended for primary care physicians, specialty physicians, residents, medical students, physician assistants, nurses, and nurse practitioners.
Statement of Need
Delaware is the second fastest-heating state in the country and vulnerable populations are at increased risk for heat-related complications, particularly geriatric patients. The goal of this initiative is to educate learners on the significance of heat-related changes and to enhance their ability to effectively educate patients and caregivers.
Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this activity learners should be able to:
- Explain the physiologic changes in aging related to heat thermoregulation and skin integrity.
- Analyze how age-related physiologic changes impact clinical presentations during periods of extreme heat.
- Differentiate between medications that increase heat-related risks and formulate management plans for patients using these agents.
- Implement evidence-based preventive strategies and develop educational tools for caregivers of geriatric populations.
