Fetal and Infant Mortality Review (FIMR)
Regularly Scheduled Series (RSS) - twice a month (Newark/Dover) - Virtual
Geographic Location: Local/Regional
Target Audience
This activity is intended for OB/GYNs, MFM physicians, Primary Care Physicians, Psychologists, Neonatology Physicians, RNs, Social Work professionals in OB/GYN, Neonatology and other health care professionals working with maternity and bereavement support.
Statement of Need
FIMR CRT participants review cases (previously prepared by the RN FIMR PC) in order to identify factors associated w/each case, including but not limited to prenatal care, hospital delivery care, social supports, bereavement support & care and life course perspective/ACEs using a health equity approach/lens. Women who have suffered a fetal demise or infant death (i.e.) r/t prematurity/congenital anomalies, etc. are at a higher risk for future poor outcomes. When the Mother returns for a postpartum visit, this is an excellent opportunity to discuss the current poor outcome and risks for a future poor outcome. Discussions can include timing of next the pregnancy, management of the future pregnancy and/or a referral for an inter-conceptual care visit with MFM to address the Mother's history and risks and outline a plan of care for a future pregnancy. This is an excellent time to address any chronic medical conditions the Mother might have and referrals to specialists can be made to get the Mother into care for management of these conditions before her next pregnancy.
Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this activity learners should be able to:
- Discuss the importance of follow up after a pregnancy loss.
- Counsel women on the importance of an early postpartum visit.
