Overview
Join Dr. Markian Pazuniak for an informative virtual education session on Pediatric Mental Health in the Schools: School-Based Interventions. This session will explore the supports available for students with academic and psychological needs, how schools identify and assess these needs, and the interventions that can be most effective in different settings. Participants will gain a clearer understanding of practical strategies to better support student well-being and learning in the school environment.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for physicians, primary care physicians, specialty physicians, physician assistants, advanced clinical practitioners, nurse practitioners, nurses, and social workers .
Statement of Need
There is a demonstrated need for improved communication regarding the student supports available within schools for addressing pediatric mental health concerns. Many parents are not fully informed about which interventions are appropriate for children with specific mental health conditions or learning disabilities. Additionally, essential supports such as the Individualized Education Program (IEP) and Section 504 accommodations are not routinely covered in clinical or educational training. This gap underscores the necessity for targeted educational programming to enhance clinician and educator awareness, and to improve collaboration with families to better meet the mental health and learning needs of students.
Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this activity learners should be able to:
1. Describe the components and purpose of a 504 Plan and an Individualized Education Program (IEP).2. Differentiate among the levels of support available within the educational system.;
3. Identify students who would benefit from an IEP or 504 Plan based on academic or mental health needs.
4. Recognize common obstacles to implementing 504 Plans and IEPs in school settings.
5. Formulate practical solutions to address barriers to effective plan implementation.
