Target Audience

This activity is intended for primary care physicians, speacialty physicians, pharmacists, residents, medical students, physician assistants, nurses, and nurse practitioners.

Statement of Need

Prescribers continue to practice poor  antibiotic stewardship.  They prescribe antibiotic regimens that are too long and too broad.  This leads to complications and resistance.Caregivers are unaware of new guidelines in  antimicrobial stewardship. Caregivers need a better understanding of novel presentations of infection in immuno-compromised hosts. 

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity learners should be able to:

1. Explain that "shorter is better" when it comes to antibiotic durations.
2. Discuss the importance of critical physical exam signs and historical clues to infection in immuno-compromised hosts as well as novel treatment strategies.  
3. Discuss effective discharge strategies that embrace both patient safety and value, shortening duration of hospital stay for these patients.
