Event Overview

The Clinical Guidance training provides comprehensive, evidence-based information to provide the optimal management of pregnant and parenting women with opioid use disorder and their infants. The training highlights successful approaches for caring for the mother with opioid use disorder and her child. This interactive training aims to help healthcare and behavioral health professionals and patients determine the most clinically appropriate action for a particular situation and informs individualized treatment decisions..

Target Audience

This activity is intended for Primary Care Physicians, Specialty Care Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, and Pharmacists.

Statement of Need

Lack of specific education around best practices for treating pregnant and parenting women with opioid use disorder (OUD). There is a knowledge gap of evidence-based practice on treating this population.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity learners should be able to:

  1. Discuss how to educate and counsel pregnant patients with OUD about different treatment options and the potential social, medical, and legal consequences of each form of therapy and of opioid use during pregnancy.
  2. Identify how to select appropriate pharmacotherapyfor initiating medication-assisted treatment (MAT) in pregnant women with OUD.
  3. Identify how to choose appropriate techniques to screen for and treat neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) and neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS).
