Purpose

This summit is designed for healthcare professionals that interact with and help treat the morbidly obese patient.  Providing detailed educational information from experts in this field will address the knowledge gap in treatment.  Assessment of the complex population of obesity will help prevent disease progression and address comorbidities earlier. The knowledge obtained in this summit will help assess and counsel obese patients more effectively.


Target Audience

This activity is intended for primary care physicians, specialty physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nutritionists, advanced practice providers, students, and pharmacists.


Statement of Need

Certain caregivers are not specially trained or possess specific knowledge for what is available to obese patients for surgical and medical treatments and the physical and emotional complexities of obesity   


Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity learners should be able to:

  1. Discuss available programs and treatments for obese patients.
  2. Describe metabolic and hormonal imbalances as causes of obesity.
  3. Recognize advocacy and weight bias experienced by the obese population.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the Medical Society of Delaware and Christiana Care. The Medical Society of Delaware is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
