Overview

Foundations of Compassionate Care in Medicine is a two-day, interactive workshop designed to support physicians in integrating evidence-informed principles of compassion, presence, and relational awareness into their daily clinical practice. Through a combination of brief lectures, experiential exercises, guided reflection, and small-group discussion, participants will explore the neurobiological, sensory, and behavioral dimensions of compassionate care and their direct impact on patient outcomes and clinician well-being.

This program emphasizes the practical application of these skills in routine patient encounters, enhancing communication, empathy, and therapeutic presence across specialties. Participants will develop strategies to strengthen patient–physician rapport, reduce burnout, and sustain meaning and satisfaction in professional practice while delivering care that reflects the highest standards of empathy and clinical excellence

Target Audience

This event is intended for practicing physicians and physicians-in-training at all levels including medical students.

Statement of Need

Clinicians often receive limited formal training in the practical application of compassion-based clinical skills such as empathic communication, attuned listening, mindful presence, and ethical therapeutic touch. These competencies are essential for effective patient care yet are underrepresented in traditional medical education and ongoing professional development. As a result, physicians may struggle to apply relational and neuroscience-informed techniques to calm distressed patients, build trust, and enhance therapeutic engagement. Communication that becomes rushed or impersonal can compromise patient safety, satisfaction, and adherence while contributing to clinician burnout. CME education is needed to strengthen clinicians’ knowledge, competence, and performance in integrating compassionate care practices into daily clinical encounters to improve both patient and provider outcomes.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity learners should be able to:

  1. Describe the theoretical foundations of compassionate care using the holistic-organismic model and phenomenological perspectives as frameworks for clinical reasoning in neurology, psychiatry, and other patient-centered specialties.
  2. Identify evidence-based strategies to enhance clinician engagement, resilience, and long-term capacity for compassionate practice in high-stress clinical environments.
  3. Apply practical, neuroscience-informed communication tools to strengthen patient connection, therapeutic presence, and rapport during clinical encounters.
  4. Explain and demonstrate how intentional language, touch, and attentional focus can modulate patient perception, regulation, and clinical outcomes.
  5. Integrate embodied self-regulation and self-care techniques into daily practice to mitigate burnout and maintain consistent delivery of compassionate care.
  6. Develop individualized strategies to sustain compassionate engagement and professional vitality across the continuum of patient care
